Kate Bush has topped a number of categories in Spotify’s new Top Songs of Summer 2022 streaming report, alongside fellow British pop star, Harry Styles. 

Despite the generations between them, the two pop icons’ popularity appears to be globally ubiquitous, with Styles’ hit Harry’s House single As It Was claiming the top spot in 24 counties, making it the most streamed song globally. While, Bush’s 1985 Hounds of Love hit, Running Up That Hill (Deal With God) came in as the second most streamed globally, and also took out number one over Styles in both the US and UK. 

Originally released 37 years ago, Bush’s Running Up That Hill has been enjoying an unprecedented resurgence in popularity after it featured prominently in the fourth season of Netflix’s cult-sci series Stranger Things. The series finale, aired back in July, also landed Metal legends Metallica back at the top of charts around the world with their 1986 smash, Masters of Puppets.  

Per Spotify’s report, there was a massive jump in first-time plays of Running Up That Hill from listeners aged 24 and under, equating to a 7,800 per cent spike in streaming since it appeared in the sci-fi show’s epic soundtrack. You can find a more detailed breakdown of Spotify’s Top Songs Of Summer 2022 here.

Following the release of Stranger Things 4, Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill renaissance has been gloriously unstoppable. Back in July, it was confirmed the pop icon's chart run had broken three Guinness World Records. Read more, here.

I want to thank them so much for bringing the song into so many people’s lives. Thank you so very much for making the song a No 1 in such an unexpected way.”
