Recorded 21 years ago at Toast Studios in San Francisco, Toast is something of a unicorn in the ever-growing Young canon.

The seven-track project was shelved prior to release, in favour of 2002’s Are You Passionate?, after Neil Young deemed it “so sad that [he] couldn’t put it out.” This seemingly contradictory sentiment, from an artist so adept at navigating the depths of emotional turmoil, has made the LP a highly sought-after listen for fans.

“The music of Toast is about a relationship,” Young said in a statement about the album. “There is a time in many relationships that go bad, a time long before the breakup, where it dawns on one of the people, maybe both, that it’s over. This was that time.”

The 7-song unreleased album was recorded at Toast studio in San Francisco in late 2000 and early 2001. It was shelved at the time and Are You Passionate? was the next album Neil released. Different versions of four songs appeared on Are You Passionate?, but the other three songs are completely unreleased – until now. Pre-order the legendary “lost” album on CD and vinyl, below!
