An upcoming documentary about pioneering rock singer, Tina Turner has been announced. The feature-length film, titled Tina: An Intimate Portrait of the Legendary Singer Tina Turner will premiere on HBO and HBO Max next month on March 27th.

Co-directors, Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin will detail Turner’s inspiring life story, from her initial rise to stardom alongside Ike Turner in the 1960s, to her stunning resurgence as a global pop phenomenon in the 1980s; as well as her personal and professional struggles along the way.

The film promises an “unvarnished, dynamic account” of the icon’s life, told through “insightful” interviews with Tina herself, in addition to figures such as actress Angela Bassett, husband/former record exec Erwin Bach, Oprah Winfrey, and more. According to a press release “a wealth of never-before-seen footage, audiotapes and personal photos” will be used to tell “a deep and absorbing story about the queen of rock ‘n’ roll in all its complexity.“

Following her divorce from Ike Turner in 1978, Tina spent several years in Las Vegas, performing in cabaret clubs and appearing on television variety shows, before staging one of the most stunning comebacks in the business with her 1984 worldwide hit album, Private Dancer, with lead single “What’s Love Got To Do With It” becoming her first and only number one hit on the Billboard 100 charts.

Private Dancer made Tina a bona fide superstar, won her a slew of Grammy awards and led to a best-selling autobiography, I, Tina; turning Tina into a symbol of strength and resilience.

Tina is a “celebration of Tina Turner’s immense talent, improbable journey to global stardom and her own embrace of her status as a beloved and respected survivor.” The documentary will debut on Saturday, March 27 on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

The film’s announcement on Wednesday comes on the same day it was announced that Tina Turner has been nominated for induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2021 as a solo artist (she was previously inducted alongside Ike Turner in 1991) – follow this link to vote for her!
