We were lucky enough to have caught one of Patti Smith’s Melbourne shows recently and was absolutely knocked out by her cover of "When Doves Cry". Obviously performed now as a tribute to Prince, Patti first recorded it in 2002 – it appears on the 2CD Patti compilation Land (1975-2002).

There’s no video footage from the recent tour, but this great video of a performance in Athens last year captures it well. Patti of course has a habit of making a song her own when she covers it – think about her versions of Van Morrison's "Gloria" and Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe" – and her current arrangement of this is a stunner.
