Celebrating 50 years since David Bowie first unveiled Starman on Top of the Pops in 1972, upgraded footage of the legendary performance has been shared.
Bowie made his debut on the BBC’s preeminent music program on July 6th, 1972 with a lauded performance of Starman that is said to have “changed the course of music forever”
Last month, audio of Bowie’s Starman (Top of the Pops Version 2022 Mix) was shared, marking 50 years since the late icon’s revolutionary fifth studio album, The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars arrived. (See below)
Now, 50 years since he first brought Ziggy to life with a Top of the Pops debut that remains, to this day, one of the most essential pieces of music television ever broadcast, an upgraded video of the legendary performance has also been shared.
It wasn’t just the performance that launched Bowie to stardom, July 6th is said to be “the day that invented the 80’s” with a generation of upcoming musicians, including U2’s Bono, The Cure’s Robert Smith, Boy George, Adam Ant, Mick Jones of the Clash, Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet, Morrissey and Johnny Marr of the Smiths, Siouxsie Sioux, Toyah Willcox, John Taylor and Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran, Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode and many more, all tuning in to Bowie's the iconic television debut that night.
It has been shared widely over the decades since, from bootleg VHS copies to YouTube clips, but this is the first time that it has been restored to the glory such a pivotal performance deserves. Enjoy below!
