Relive the Moment Motörhead Tore up ‘Top of the Pops’ with ‘Ace of Spades’ in 1980

Back in 1980, British music TV monolith, Top of the Pops played host to one of the most high-octane acts to have ever graced their stage, hard rock legends Motörhead, who appeared in support of their seminal singles, Ace of Spades. 

Not only was it the most full-throttle performance to grace the TOPTP’s stage, but it’s also one of the most full-throttle songs of all time! The song spent 13 weeks in the UK Singles Chart and peaked at number 15 upon its initial release.

And, when Motörhead showed up to deliver the blistering track live in 1980, it’s safe to say the Top of the Pops audience had no idea what hit them! Enjoy below.

In 2002, music critic David Konow labelled Ace of Spades to be the definitive Motörhead anthem, saying the song "put a choke on the British music charts and proved to all that a band could succeed without sacrificing its blunt power and speed"
