Another week of quarantine has brought us another fine cover from Billie Joe Armstrong. For the latest episode of his No Fun Monday’s quarantine series, the Green Day frontman has paid tribute to the late, Adam Schlesinger by covering the Wonders’ “That Thing You Do!”
Schlesinger sadly lost his life earlier this month due to complications caused by COVID-19. Along with fronting power-pop group Fountains of Wayne, the singer wrote the title track for Tom Hanks’ 1996 film, That Thing You Do! which featured a fictional Sixties band called the Wonders.
In last week’s instalment of No Fun Monday’s, Armstrong put his signature punk twist on the Bangles’ Manic Monday with special guest Susanna Hoffs. Listen below as Armstrong gives a similar 21st century update to Schlesinger’s “That Thing You Do!” in a quick cut video paying homage to the city of New York.

Over the weekend, Armstrong also lent his talents to Global Citizens’ One World: Together at Home TV special, curated by Lady Gaga, performing a stripped-back version of “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” Check it out here.
